The Lazy B Story… | Go-Back-A-Page

Channel Radio’s Encore Player (Listen Again)

Born in Bournville, Birmingham, England. I attended Raddlebarn Junior & Infants School, followed by Selly Oak Boys. After School most evenings you would find Lil’ LB working in my local butchers shop  Chopping his meat on the block and amazing all the customers with his chunky lean chops and big portions! (and mopping the floor too) *sob*

Despite starting my working career in an office environment (I think the appeal was working with an office full of females to be honest) Junior LB made his move to Radio by joining Hospital Radio (BHBN) and after excelling soon found myself as a tech Op @ Birmingham’s BRMB.

I found the place a very sad place to work with people all out for themselves, nasty, horrid ppl that just seemed to care about themselves. People that would do anything to get your job, and do anything to hinder you or to get you into trouble. It was only a matter of time till I was forced out….. I didn’t fight it, I have to be happy in my work and I have to be appreciated.

I soon moved on and after freelancing at various stations in the midlands including Kix96, WM, Xtra Am & WYVN, Birmingham’s Buzz FM, (not to mention dabbling in Pirate Radio). Buzz FM was a local was a local station that was suffering financial problems and had found itself in danger of going bankrupt (yet again) and was only days away from disappearing from the airwaves of Birmingham

Enter LB!! I phoned the station and got hold of a guy called Lindsay Reid who was an original investor in the station and one of a handful of staff left at the station, I offered my services free of charge and soon got to grips with the every day running of this struggling station. I was active in all departments and very soon found myself at home at this “state of the art” radio station. It was saved from death by a guy called Chris Carey who had an amazing radio background, stretching right back to the Pirate Radio days of Caroline!

To cut a long story as short as I can, after taking the station to great highs and breaking virtually all the rules in the radio book he eventually stripped the station of all assets and took everything away in a fleet of huge lorrys leaving the station off air, financially ruined and on the verge of being closed down. Once again it was purchased again for £1 by Muff Murfin or Murfin Music (a famous Jingle Company) based in Worcester, UK.

He raised it from the ashes and Buzz ended its life with relative success but eventually lost its license to Choice FM. I spent the best days of my life at Buzz and met some lovely people too. It had a funny old life, it deserved much better, RIP Buzz FM.

No sooner had Buzz finished broadcasting than I was offered work at Choice FM, with its manager Franklyn Hughes. I had a crazy time and worked in many departments throughout the station but amongst my best days were spent producing The Drive Time Show with Mark Wright. Eventually, as with any successful station; it was bought out by the Big Boys from London and was never the same for me.

I made my move from Radio to TV and worked on such programmes as Dalziel & Pascoe, Casualty, The Bill, TFI Friday, Eastenders, Dr Who and many, many other dramas, mostly for the BBC, including “Hotel Babylon” and Torchwood!
