Nick joined his local hospital radio station aged just 15, took a summer job at Reading’s 210FM as a studio assistant the following year, and by the mid-80s was playing local bars and clubs. That all ended in about 1992 when career and family took over, but his enthusiasm for sharing the music he loves with an appreciative audience never left him.
In the early 2000s, Nick produced a series of special mixes for his own amusement (which are now shared with the world on Mixcloud), and shortly afterwards started to experiment with the emerging digital DJ technologies and playing at friends’ parties.
Then came the first “Funk & Soul Archive” podcast in March 2014. Picked up a few months later by Channel Radio’s Phil Houston, the show covers five decades of dance music from the 60s onwards as well as occasional new releases and specially themed shows.
Nick prides himself on a fast-paced, upbeat show that mixes up (literally) the known and loved floor-fillers with less obvious gems, and includes Northern soul, funk, disco and jazz-funk.
“It’s my adiction – something I have to do regularly to feel complete – and my therapy. I didn’t realise how much I needed it until I started again!”
Funk & Soul Archive – Nick Keir – 6pm-8pm on Saturday and repeated on Friday 9pm-11pm
